Malpensa to Courchevel Transfer 2026: Time, Cost, Route

📅 25 February 202610 min read📝 Malpensa Transfer

Private transfer Milan Malpensa to Courchevel 1850 in 4 hours 30 minutes: Mont Blanc vs Frejus tunnel comparison, Mercedes V-Class with ski rack, fixed 2026 prices, driver's winter take.

Courchevel from Malpensa is 380 kilometres of motorway, mountains and one Alpine tunnel. The drive runs 4 hours 30 minutes in good conditions, longer when the Tarentaise valley closes for snow clearance. Most of our winter clients arrive at Malpensa Terminal 1 on a morning flight from London, Moscow or Dubai, want to be on a ski lift by 14:00 in time for an afternoon run, and treat the transfer as the price of skipping Geneva. This guide is the version we wish we could hand every passenger before they pick a tunnel.

Route at a glance: 380 km, 4h30, two tunnel options

Malpensa to Courchevel 1850 is one of the longer Alpine transfers we run. The route follows Italian motorway A4 west to Aosta, then either climbs through the Mont Blanc Tunnel into France and joins the A40 toward Albertville, or takes the southern detour via the Frejus Tunnel into Modane and joins the A43. Both arrive at Moutiers in the Tarentaise valley. From Moutiers, the final 23 km is the D915 — a serpentine that climbs from 480 metres to 1,850 metres in 45 minutes.

Mont Blanc vs Frejus: which tunnel to choose

This is the question every passenger asks before departure. Both tunnels work. They are not interchangeable.

Mont Blanc Tunnel

11.6 km long, opened 1965, single-bore, two-way. Connects Courmayeur (Italy) with Chamonix (France). The approach is dramatic — the road climbs above the Dora Baltea river and the Mont Blanc massif fills the windscreen. After the tunnel you are 15 km from Chamonix and 75 km from Albertville. Mont Blanc is the shorter route to Courchevel, the more scenic, and the standard choice in summer or on dry winter days.

What can close it: maintenance (one weekend most years), accidents (rare but the closure can last 12+ hours when they happen), and heavy snowfall on the approach roads above Courmayeur (chains required, speed limits at 30 km/h).

Frejus Tunnel

12.9 km long, opened 1980, double-bore as of 2024. Connects Bardonecchia (Italy) with Modane (France). The approach climbs through the Susa valley west of Turin, longer in distance but with less elevation gain. After the tunnel you join the A43 and have a flatter run to Albertville. Frejus is the safer winter choice when an Atlantic storm hits the western Alps — the tunnel itself is identical safety-wise but the approach roads see less snow than Mont Blanc.

Our drivers default to Mont Blanc unless ANAS, the Italian highway authority, posts a meteo warning or a closure. Both tolls (€50.30 or €52.30) are included in our fixed transfer price. Round-trip discounts exist (€62.80 for Mont Blanc, €65 for Frejus, valid 7 days) and our drivers buy these when you book both legs.

Vehicles for a long Alpine ride

Four hours 30 minutes in the car is a long time. Choose the vehicle accordingly.

Mercedes E-Class

One to three passengers, 2 small suitcases, 1 ski bag. Best for a couple flying in light. Sedan comfort, leather seats, climate control. Not ideal if you have hard ski cases or a snowboard, because the trunk gets full quickly.

Mercedes V-Class

One to seven passengers. The workhorse of Alpine transfers. Six full ski bags fit on the dedicated roof rack, plus snowboards or splitboards. Six large suitcases in the back. USB charging, individual reclining seats, panoramic windows for the Mont Blanc approach. Most of our Courchevel clients book V-Class.

Mercedes S-Class

One to three passengers, premium long-haul. Massage seats, rear-cabin tablet controls, refrigerated minibar. Used when the client wants 4 hours 30 minutes to feel like 3. Ski equipment goes on optional roof box.

Mercedes Sprinter

Eight to sixteen passengers, group skiing. Suspended rear suspension for the D915 serpentine. Standard winter package: snow chains on board, studded tyres on request November to April.

What it costs in 2026

Direct private transfer Malpensa to Courchevel 1850, 2026 prices, fixed, fuel and tolls included.

Mercedes S-Class1-3 pax + 2 bags + 1 ski€1,150-1,400€2,150-2,500
Mercedes Sprinter8-16 pax + luggage€1,400-1,650€2,650-2,950

All-inclusive: fuel, both tunnel tolls (Mont Blanc or Frejus), motorway tolls (~€55 Italian + ~€35 French side), airport parking, 60 minutes of free wait time after landing. Snow chains included November 15 to April 15. Child seats free on request.

Geneva alternative: Geneva Airport is 149 km from Courchevel (2 hours 45 minutes) versus Malpensa's 380 km (4 hours 30 minutes). If a Geneva flight is available at a comparable fare, Geneva wins on drive time alone. But Geneva flights from outside Europe are often 30-50% more expensive than Malpensa flights, and Malpensa has more flights from Russia, the Middle East and Asia. Total door-to-door cost is usually similar.

Crossing the Italy-France border: docs and tips

Both Mont Blanc and Frejus tunnels are inside Schengen. No passport stamp, no customs declaration in normal circumstances. But carry your passport (or EU ID card for EU citizens) — French border police can pull random vehicles aside at the tunnel exit. Last year about one car in twenty got checked at the French Mont Blanc exit, mostly looking for undeclared cash and tobacco.

What can hold you up:

  • Currency over €10,000 — must be declared in advance via French customs online portal.
  • Tobacco over EU duty-free limits if you crossed from Switzerland or duty-free Livigno on the same trip.
  • Pet animals without an EU passport and current rabies certificate.

Driver's take: in 200+ Courchevel transfers, our cars were stopped 4 times. Two times it was a 90-second document check, twice they searched the boot. Be polite, answer in English or French, and you are through in five minutes.

Winter driving conditions: snow, chains, road closures

The D915 from Moutiers to Courchevel is 23 km of serpentine. In summer it takes 30 minutes. In a snowstorm it takes 90 minutes and you are following a snowplough. Three hard rules from our drivers.

Rule 1 — Chains are not optional. French law requires snow chains or four winter tyres on the D915 between November 1 and March 31. Our V-Class fleet runs studded winter tyres and carries chains for the steepest sections.

Rule 2 — Wind closures happen. The pass above 1,500 metres closes for high wind once or twice a season. If the closure happens during your transfer, our drivers reroute through Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Aime — adds 45 minutes.

Rule 3 — Tarentaise gets locked for snow clearance. Heavy snowfall over Christmas-New Year week sometimes shuts the D915 for 60-90 minutes while ploughs clear ahead of the lift opening at 09:00. Plan arrival before 19:00 the day before or after 11:00 on the day.

Driver's insider tip: book your transfer to land at Malpensa on a Friday or Saturday, not the Sunday changeover day. Sunday is when 30,000 skiers leave Courchevel and 30,000 arrive — D915 traffic doubles, transfer times stretch 30-45 minutes longer in both directions.

Ski gear and luggage: what fits where

The single most common pre-booking question. The honest answers.

  • V-Class with ski rack: 6 pairs of skis (up to 195 cm), 2 snowboards (any length), 6 large suitcases up to 30 kg each, 4 boot bags, 1 stroller. Or: 4 ski bags + 1 splitboard + 6 suitcases + 1 large dog crate.
  • E-Class: 2 pairs of skis + 2 suitcases + 2 carry-ons. Snowboards over 158 cm do not fit comfortably inside the trunk.
  • S-Class: Sedan trunk, similar to E-Class. Roof box optional (€40 supplement) for ski equipment.
  • Sprinter: 14 ski bags + 12 suitcases + group equipment. The chassis we use has a 5.5 metre rear cargo area.

Bring ski boots in a carry-on if possible — boots are the one item that ruins your week if it gets damaged in luggage handling. Helmets fit in any vehicle. Hard cases need confirmation before booking — some are 200 cm and require special placement.

Booking and pickup at Malpensa Terminal 1 / 2

You land. The car is waiting. Here is how the meet-and-greet works.

Domestic and EU arrivals come out at Door 4, Terminal 1 (or Door A, Terminal 2 for low-cost). Non-Schengen arrivals (UK, US, Russia, Middle East, Asia) clear passport control first and then exit at Door 4. Our driver waits in the meet-and-greet zone with a name sign printed in your booking name. The car is parked in the short-term lot, 5 minutes from the exit.

Flight tracking is automatic — when your flight is delayed, our dispatch sees the new ETA and the driver adjusts. First 60 minutes of waiting after the scheduled landing are free. Beyond that, €1 per minute applies for E/V-Class, €1.50 per minute for S-Class, €2 per minute for Sprinter.

Payment after the ride. Cash (EUR) or card on the spot at the end of the journey, or online prepayment in advance through our booking system. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup. Inside 48 hours, 50% charge applies.

Call or WhatsApp +39 327 753 7776 for a same-day quote with your flight number, date, and number of skiers. Malpensa Transfer has been running this route since 2013.
