Realistic one-day Lake Como itinerary from Milan Malpensa: Varenna, Bellagio, one villa, last train back. Hour-by-hour plan with 2026 prices and a driver's honest take.
Yes, you can do Lake Como in one day from Malpensa. No, you cannot do all of it. Drivers ferry guests up the A9 every week and the script is always the same: the visitor wants Como city plus Bellagio plus Varenna plus two villas plus dinner in Tremezzo. By 4 PM they are tired, the ferries are full, and the last train back to Milano Centrale leaves Varenna at 21:36. This guide is the version we wish we could hand every passenger before they land. Pick two towns, one villa, eat lunch on the water, and be honest with the clock. Eight hours on the lake beats twelve hours of stress.
Is Lake Como worth a day trip from Malpensa?
For a first-time visitor with a single free day, yes. The Centro Lago section between Varenna, Bellagio and Tremezzo is the part you have seen in every Italian travel magazine. It is genuinely 25 minutes by hydrofoil from end to end. What you cannot do in eight hours is the southern shore (Como city, Cernobbio, Brunate), the eastern Lecco branch, and the upper villages above Menaggio. Skip the city of Como itself for a day trip. It is a perfectly nice town, but it is an hour out of your way and it is not what the lake is famous for.
The honest target is two towns plus one villa. Three towns is possible only if you cut the villa. Two villas is possible only if you drop one of the towns. Build the day around the ferry timetable, not around the train.
Two ways from Malpensa: Saronno line or Milano Centrale
You have three transit options from Malpensa Airport and they are not equal.
Option A — Malpensa to Como direct via Saronno
Malpensa Express to Saronno, change for the regional line to Como San Giovanni. Total 1 hour 5 minutes, around €16 including the change. This drops you at Como city, which means you then need a 35-minute fast ferry up to Bellagio. Workable, but you lose the morning to transit.
Option B — Malpensa via Milano Centrale to Varenna
Malpensa Express to Centrale (50 minutes, €13), then a Trenord regional to Varenna-Esino (65 minutes, €7.50). Total 1 hour 55 minutes door to platform, but you arrive at the most photogenic harbour on the lake and you are already inside the Centro Lago triangle. This is the route we recommend.
Option C — Private transfer Malpensa to Varenna or Bellagio
Door-to-door, 95 to 110 km, 1 hour 45 minutes by car. Mercedes E-Class around €240, V-Class around €280. No tickets, no validation, no missed connection if your flight is late. Useful if you land at 7 AM and want to be on a ferry by 9.
Getting there from Malpensa — driver's take
Honest version from someone who runs this route weekly: if you are a couple with luggage, Option B works and saves money. If you are three or more people, or if you have any ski bags, golf clubs, or a stroller, private transfer is cheaper per head and faster than dragging suitcases through Centrale. Our Mercedes V-Class to Varenna is €280 fixed, 1 hour 45 minutes via A8 then SS36 along the eastern shore. Phone or WhatsApp +39 327 753 7776 and we track your flight — if you land at 06:50, the car is at Door 4 by the time you clear baggage.
Optimal one-day route: Varenna, Bellagio, one villa
Here is the hour-by-hour script that actually works in 2026. Times include 15-minute buffers because Italian ferries are punctual on paper, not always in practice.
- 07:00 — Pick-up at Malpensa Terminal 1 or 2.
- 08:45 — Arrive Varenna. Drop bags at the station luggage locker (€6 small, €8 large).
- 09:00 to 10:30 — Varenna walk: lakefront promenade, Villa Monastero gardens (€6 entry, opens 09:30), the harbour and the steep alley up to Piazza San Giorgio.
- 10:45 — Hydrofoil Varenna to Bellagio, 15 minutes, €4.60. Buy at the ticket house at the molo.
- 11:00 to 13:30 — Bellagio. Walk Salita Serbelloni cobblestone alley, Punta Spartivento (free, the tip of the peninsula with views down both branches of the lake), lunch at Ristorante Bilacus or Salice Blu.
- 13:45 — Ferry Bellagio to Villa del Balbianello via Lenno (about 30 minutes).
- 14:30 to 16:00 — Villa del Balbianello tour. Gardens only €10, with interior €20. Closed Monday and Wednesday — check before you go.
- 16:30 — Ferry back to Varenna, 30 to 45 minutes depending on the connection.
- 17:30 to 19:00 — Dinner at Vecchia Varenna or Il Cavatappi. Trout, pizzoccheri, a glass of Sforzato.
- 19:36 or 20:36 — Train Varenna to Milano Centrale. Last train is 21:36 — do not miss it.
- 21:30 or later — Malpensa Express back to MXP, or pre-booked transfer.
This is around 8 hours on the lake plus 4 hours of transit. Tight, but realistic. If your flight allows, stay one night in Varenna and turn this into a proper weekend.
Three towns to know: Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio
The Centro Lago triangle is three towns linked by hydrofoil every 30 to 40 minutes in season.
Varenna
The quietest of the three. Pastel houses, a 1 km lakefront promenade carved into the cliff, Villa Monastero with its 2 km of sea-side gardens, and Castello di Vezio above the village (worth the climb, €4 entry, falconry shows at 14:30 in summer). Trains arrive at Varenna-Esino station, a 10-minute walk down to the harbour.
Bellagio
The famous one. Built on a peninsula at the apex of the inverted Y. Salita Serbelloni is the cobblestone shopping street climbing from the harbour to the church. Villa Melzi gardens (€8) on the western side, Punta Spartivento with the iconic view at the northern tip. Lunch crowds peak 13:00 to 14:30 — eat at 12:00 or 14:30.
Menaggio
Western shore, less visited, useful if you have a car. The lakefront is wider and flatter than Varenna or Bellagio. Skip on a one-day train trip.
Pick one villa: Balbianello, Carlotta or Monastero
You will see three villas mentioned everywhere. They are not interchangeable.
- Villa del Balbianello (Lenno) — the dramatic one. Cypress trees, terraced gardens, a small palace on a peninsula. Used as a filming location for Star Wars Episode II and the 2006 Casino Royale. Gardens €10, full tour with interior €20. Open mid-March to mid-November. Closed Monday and Wednesday. Arrive by FAI water taxi from Lenno (€8.50 round-trip) or walk in 20 minutes from the village.
- Villa Carlotta (Tremezzo) — the botanical one. 14 acres of azaleas, camellias and a private art museum with Canova sculptures. €12 combined ticket. Open daily April to October, 09:30 to 18:30. Easier to reach than Balbianello — ferry stops directly outside.
- Villa Monastero (Varenna) — the convenient one. Inside Varenna itself, no extra ferry needed. 2 km of waterfront gardens with statues and 900 plant species. €6 gardens only, €11 with the house museum.
For one day: Balbianello if you want the wow shot, Carlotta if you love plants, Monastero if you want to save time and stay in Varenna. Do not try to do two.
Ferry tickets and timetables: how NavLaghi works
Navigazione Laghi (navlaghi.it) runs every public boat on the lake. Two types matter: aliscafo (hydrofoil, fast, indoor seating) and battello (slow ferry, open deck). Single Varenna to Bellagio is €4.60 by hydrofoil, 15 minutes. The same trip by slow boat is €3.80 and 30 minutes — the slow boat is more pleasant in good weather.
The Centro Lago day pass is €23 in 2026 and covers unlimited rides between Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio, Lenno, Tremezzo and Cadenabbia. Buy if you are doing more than three legs. Validate at the harbour office before boarding the first ferry — kiosk if available, paper ticket otherwise.
Last ferries in season (April to October) usually run until 19:00 or 20:30. Off-season the last hydrofoil can be 16:30. Check navlaghi.it the night before — schedule changes between summer and winter timetables on the second Sunday of June and September.
Train tickets and the 21:36 rule
Trenord runs the Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino regional line. Single ticket €7.50, round-trip €13.40, journey time 65 minutes. There is no Frecciarossa to Varenna — only regional trains. Buy at the station ticket machine, the Trenord app, or the kiosk. Validate the paper ticket in the green box on the platform before boarding. Unvalidated tickets are fined €50 on board, no warning.
The last train back from Varenna-Esino to Milano Centrale is 21:36 in the 2026 summer timetable. Miss it and your options are a 90-minute taxi (€180+ to Centrale, more to Malpensa), a night in Varenna (Hotel du Lac from €180 in season), or a 04:30 first train back. Set an alarm.
What to eat on the lake
Local cuisine on Lake Como is mountain food, not seafood. The lake fish that matters is agone, dried and salted to make missoltino — sun-dried sardine, eaten with polenta. Other dishes worth ordering: pizzoccheri (buckwheat pasta with cabbage, potatoes and Casera cheese, from Valtellina), risotto al pesce persico (lake perch risotto), and polenta uncia (polenta with butter and cheese).
- Varenna — Vecchia Varenna (Contrada Scoscesa, 10 — book ahead), Il Cavatappi (Via XX Settembre, 10 — six tables, no reservation, arrive at 18:45).
- Bellagio — Salice Blu (Via Pietro Carcano, 12 — modern, terrace), Ristorante Bilacus (Salita Serbelloni, 32 — traditional, garden).
- Tremezzo — La Cucina della Marianna (Via Regina, 57) for a quieter dinner if you stay overnight.
Expect €40 to €55 per person for a proper sit-down dinner with wine. A glass of local Sforzato di Valtellina runs €9 to €14.
What NOT to do: common one-day mistakes
Six mistakes that ruin one-day Lake Como trips, in order of frequency.
- Trying to fit Como city in the loop. The city of Como is at the southern tip, 1 hour fast ferry from Bellagio. You will burn 3 hours just on the round trip. Save it for a separate visit.
- Driving your rental car around the lake. The SS340 along the western shore is a single lane each way with tour buses. Parking in Bellagio is €30 a day if you find it. Ferry queues for cars are 1 to 2 hours in August.
- Missing the 21:36 last train. See above.
- Buying ferry tickets after the tour groups arrive. At 10:30 a Lake Como tour bus drops 50 people at the Bellagio molo. The ticket window queue jumps from 0 to 15 minutes. Buy at 10:00 or use the day pass.
- Eating at the first restaurant on the lakefront. Mid-quality, tourist menu, €18 for a margherita. Walk 100 metres uphill — same view, half the price, better food.
- Visiting on a Monday or Wednesday and expecting Balbianello to be open. Closed those days. Check the FAI website (fondoambiente.it) before you commit to a date.
FAQ
Can I do Lake Como in one day directly from Malpensa Airport?
Yes, but only the Centro Lago section (Varenna, Bellagio, one villa). Plan 11 to 12 hours door to door: 1 hour 45 minutes transfer in, 8 hours on the lake, 1 hour 45 minutes back. Train route via Milano Centrale and Varenna is the most reliable.
Should I start in Como or Varenna?
Varenna. Como city is a 1-hour fast ferry from Bellagio and not worth a one-day detour. Starting in Varenna drops you straight into the photogenic Centro Lago triangle.
How much does the Varenna-Bellagio ferry cost?
€4.60 single, hydrofoil, 15 minutes. Slow ferry €3.80, 30 minutes. Day pass for the whole Centro Lago €23 in 2026.
Villa del Balbianello or Villa Carlotta — which is better?
Balbianello for drama and views, Carlotta for gardens and art. Balbianello is closed Monday and Wednesday; Carlotta is open daily April to October. For a one-day visit with limited time, Carlotta is easier (ferry stops outside the gate).
What is the last train back to Milan from Varenna?
21:36 in the 2026 summer timetable. Off-season last train can be 20:36. Check Trenord.it the day before.
Is Lake Como too crowded in August?
Yes, between 10 August and 25 August. Ferries are full, restaurants need reservations 3 days ahead, parking is impossible. Visit in late May, June, or mid-September instead.
Can I rent a car at Malpensa and drive to Lake Como?
You can, but you should not for a day trip. The Centro Lago villages have minimal parking, the SS340 is slow in season, and the car ferry queue eats 2 hours. Better: take the train, or book a private transfer to Varenna and let the driver handle the rest.
