Bellagio Villas Tour 2026: Melzi, Serbelloni, Balbianello

📅 8 January 202610 min read📝 Malpensa Transfer

Three iconic Lake Como villas, one realistic day. Verified 2026 hours, ticket prices, ferry timings and the parking trick our drivers use to skip Bellagio's high-season traffic.

The names sound interchangeable — Villa Melzi, Villa Serbelloni, Villa Balbianello — but three different families built them, two different access rules govern them, and they sit in two different lakeside towns. Plan the day wrong and you waste two hours on the wrong ferry. Plan it right and you finish dinner in Bellagio with a Negroni and your shoes off.

Our drivers run this route from Malpensa eight to twelve times a month between April and October. What follows is the version that actually works in 2026 — opening times re-checked in May, prices verified against the FAI and Promobellagio sites, ferry slots cross-referenced with the Navigazione Lago di Como spring timetable.

Why three villas need a full day

Bellagio sits on the promontory that splits Lake Como into a Y. Two of the three villas — Melzi and Serbelloni — are inside the town itself. The third, Balbianello, sits across the water on the Lavedo peninsula in Lenno, about 25 minutes by fast ferry. None of them open before 09:30. Serbelloni only admits guided groups at 11:00 and 15:30. Balbianello closes its garden gate at 18:00 sharp.

Stack those constraints and the day has roughly four moving slots. Try to add a fourth villa (Carlotta in Tremezzo is the usual temptation) and something gets cut — usually lunch, which would be a mistake in this part of Italy.

The tour suits three types of traveller: garden people who care about botany and landscape design, history readers who want Renaissance and neoclassical context, and film fans hunting the Star Wars and Casino Royale locations at Balbianello. If none of those describe you, do the one-villa version with Balbianello and spend the rest of the afternoon on a Riva boat.

Villa Melzi Gardens — the neoclassical opener

Address: Lungolario Manzoni, 22021 Bellagio CO. The entrance is a five-minute walk south from the Bellagio ferry pier along the lakeside promenade.

Francesco Melzi d'Eril — Napoleon's vice-president of the Italian Republic — built the villa between 1808 and 1810 as a private summer retreat. The villa itself stays closed; what you visit are the gardens, the family chapel, and a small museum with Egyptian artefacts the family collected in the 1820s.

The gardens follow the English landscape style of the period: open lawns sloping to the water, sequoias planted in 1820 that now top 40 metres, a Japanese garden of azaleas and rhododendrons that peaks in the last week of April and first week of May. The Naumachia pavilion at the southern end is where Liszt sat with Marie d'Agoult in 1837 and worked on the Album d'un voyageur — the marble bench with the statue of Dante and Beatrice is the unofficial photo stop.

Practical:

  • Open daily 28 March – 2 November 2026, 09:30–18:30 (last entry 18:00)
  • Tickets: €10 adult / €6.50 reduced (10–18, students under 25) / free under 10
  • Audio guide €3, available in EN / IT / DE / FR
  • No advance booking required — buy at the gate, queue rarely over 10 minutes
  • Allow 60–90 minutes

Driver's tip: the rhododendron weeks (late April to mid-May) are extraordinary but draw coach tours from Como. Arrive at 09:30 sharp — by 11:00 the central paths feel like a corridor.

Parco di Villa Serbelloni — the guided hill park

This is the villa most people confuse with the lakeside Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. They are not the same building. The Grand Hotel sits at the ferry pier and is a 19th-century luxury hotel; the real Villa Serbelloni is a 16th-century estate on the hill above the town, owned by the Rockefeller Foundation since 1959 and used as a Bellagio Center for academic conferences.

You cannot enter the villa interiors. You can walk the 18 hectares of park, but only with a guided tour booked through the Promobellagio tourist office on Piazza della Chiesa. Tours run twice daily — 11:00 and 15:30 — Tuesday through Sunday from late March to early November. Groups are capped at 30. In high season (June–August and the first half of September) book the day before in person at Promobellagio or by email; the 11:00 slot fills first.

Practical:

  • Meeting point: Promobellagio office, Piazza della Chiesa 14, Bellagio
  • Tours: Tue–Sun, 11:00 and 15:30, late March – early November
  • Tickets: €13 adult / €9 reduced (children under 6 not admitted)
  • Duration: 90 minutes, moderate uphill walking on gravel paths
  • Languages: Italian and English; some Tuesdays offer German

The walk climbs about 100 metres in elevation and ends on a terrace with the only three-arm view of the lake in Bellagio — Como branch left, Lecco branch right, upper lake centre. Pliny the Younger had a villa here in the 1st century AD; the foundations are visible at the eastern end of the park.

Villa del Balbianello — the cinematic peninsula

Address: Via Comoedia 5, 22016 Lenno CO, on the Lavedo peninsula. From Bellagio's central ferry pier the fast hydrofoil to Lenno takes 25 minutes; the car-ferry route via Cadenabbia is closer to 50.

Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini built the villa in 1787 on the site of a 13th-century Franciscan monastery. The last private owner, the explorer Guido Monzino, willed it to the Italian National Trust (FAI) in 1988. Monzino led the first Italian Everest expedition in 1973 and the museum inside the villa displays his sled, ice axe and the Italian flag from the summit.

Film fans know it as the Naboo lake retreat in Star Wars Episode II (the wedding scene between Padmé and Anakin) and as the place where James Bond recovers after his torture in Casino Royale (2006). The loggia where Bond sits with Vesper Lynd is real and stands at the southern tip of the peninsula.

Practical:

  • Open Tue–Sun (closed Mon and Wed), 21 March – 8 November 2026, 10:00–18:00 (gate closes 17:00)
  • Gardens only: €11 adult / €6 child (4–14) / free FAI members
  • Gardens + villa interior guided tour: €22 / €11 child
  • Reach the peninsula on foot from the parking area (1 km, 20 min) or by FAI-operated taxi-boat from Lenno pier (€8 each way, included with combined tickets in some months)
  • Book interior tours online at fondoambiente.it — slots sell out 2–3 weeks ahead in July–August

Driver's tip: the FAI taxi-boat is more reliable than walking. The peninsula path is steep, narrow, and after rain it gets slippery. The 8 euro per leg saves your knees and 40 minutes.

A realistic one-day itinerary

This timing assumes a Malpensa pickup at 07:30 and a return drop at 19:30. Compress it by 90 minutes if you start from a Milan or Como hotel instead.

  • 07:30 — Pickup at Malpensa. 95 km to Bellagio via A8 + A9 + SS583. Arrival 09:00–09:15 in low season, closer to 09:45 in summer Friday traffic.
  • 09:30 — Villa Melzi gardens open. 75 minutes inside.
  • 11:00 — Villa Serbelloni guided tour from Piazza della Chiesa. 90 minutes.
  • 13:00 — Lunch. Ristorante Bilacus (Salita Serbelloni 32, €30–45 per person for primo + secondo + glass) or Ristorante Silvio in Loppia (Via Carcano 12, lake-fish specialist, €35–50). Both serve until 14:30.
  • 14:30 — Walk to ferry pier, take the 14:50 hydrofoil to Lenno.
  • 15:30 — Arrive Lenno, FAI taxi-boat to Balbianello peninsula.
  • 16:00–17:30 — Villa del Balbianello gardens and (if booked) interior tour.
  • 17:45 — Return ferry from Lenno to Bellagio (last fast service usually 18:10).
  • 19:00 — Driver pickup at Loppia parking lot — see tip below.

Rain or ferry-strike plan B: swap the order. Do Balbianello in the morning (driver takes you to Lenno direct, 110 km from Malpensa via SS340), then ferry to Bellagio at 13:30, lunch in Bellagio, Villa Serbelloni 15:30 tour, Villa Melzi at 17:00 (it stays open until 18:30).

Getting there from Malpensa

Distance from Malpensa Airport (MXP) to Bellagio: 95 km. Driving time: 1 hour 30 minutes in normal traffic, up to 2 hours 15 in summer Friday afternoons. Route: A8 to Lainate, A9 toward Como, then SS583 along the western shore through Cernobbio, Argegno and Tremezzo before crossing to Bellagio.

Public transport: Malpensa Express to Milano Cadorna (43 min), train to Varenna-Esino (1 h 10), ferry to Bellagio (15 min). Total door-to-door about 3 hours 20 with two changes and two ticket purchases.

Private transfer (our service): Mercedes E-Class for two passengers from €280 each way, V-Class for up to six from €320, S-Class VIP €420. Door-to-door, fixed price, child seats free, English-speaking driver. Book at malpensa-transfer.com or WhatsApp +39 327 753 7776. Pay after the ride.

Driver's tip: Bellagio parking in high season is a nightmare. The town has roughly 280 paid spaces and 14 coach bays. From late June we drop guests at Piazzale della Chiesa (next to the Serbelloni meeting point) and re-collect at the Loppia car park 1.5 km south. Saves an hour of circling, and Loppia is a nicer walk back through Villa Melzi grounds anyway.

FAQ

Can you visit all three Bellagio villas in one day?

Yes, with a 07:30 Malpensa start, advance booking of the Serbelloni 11:00 tour, and the Balbianello afternoon slot. The schedule above is what our drivers run every week.

Is Villa Melzi the same as Villa Serbelloni?

No — separate villas, separate owners, separate access rules. Melzi is open daily for self-guided garden visits, Serbelloni only by booked guided tour twice a day.

Do you need a guide at Villa Balbianello?

The gardens are self-guided. The villa interiors — Monzino's library, the Everest museum, the dining loggia from Casino Royale — open only with a guided tour booked through fondoambiente.it.

Where was Star Wars filmed at Lake Como?

Villa del Balbianello in Lenno, used for the Naboo lake retreat scenes in Episode II — Attack of the Clones. The wedding loggia at the southern tip of the peninsula is the real location.

Can you take a boat directly to Villa Balbianello from Bellagio?

Yes. The fast hydrofoil Bellagio–Lenno takes 25 minutes; from Lenno pier the FAI taxi-boat to the peninsula is another 5 minutes. Alternatively the slow car-ferry via Cadenabbia takes 50 minutes plus a 20-minute walk.

When is the best season for the Bellagio villas tour?

Late April to mid-May for the Villa Melzi rhododendrons. Mid-September for warm weather without the August crowds. October is quieter but Balbianello closes 8 November.

How much does a full Bellagio villas day cost in 2026?

Tickets and ferry: €70–80 per person. Lunch: €35–50. Private transfer Malpensa round-trip: from €280 per vehicle (split between 2–6 passengers). Total per person €130–180 depending on group size and choices.
