About the route

Malpensa → Sondrio90 minutes

Sondrio is the capital of Valtellina, the long alpine valley known in Italy for Nebbiolo grown at altitude — locally called Chiavennasca — on terraced vineyards that climb the valley walls above the Adda river. It's also the natural gateway for travellers continuing on to Bormio, Livigno, or St. Moritz, which is why a fair number of transfers through Sondrio are really the first leg of a longer mountain trip rather than the final stop.

Malpensa → Sondrio

Sondrio is the capital of Valtellina, the long alpine valley known in Italy for Nebbiolo grown at altitude — locally called Chiavennasca — on terraced vineyards that climb the valley walls above the Adda river. It's also the natural gateway for travellers continuing on to Bormio, Livigno, or St. Moritz, which is why a fair number of transfers through Sondrio are really the first leg of a longer mountain trip rather than the final stop.

The drive from Malpensa is short by our standards: about 115 km, roughly 1.5 hours. The route runs east on the A9 toward Como, then follows the SS36 Statale Valtellina, which tracks the eastern shore of Lake Como before turning inland up the Valtellina valley to Sondrio. It's a scenic drive for most of its length, and unlike our longer Alpine routes, there's no tunnel or mountain pass involved — just a valley road that stays close to water for the first half and vineyards for the second.

Meet and greet happens at arrivals with a name board, your flight is tracked, and 60 minutes of free waiting is included. Wine cases and standard luggage fit without a supplement in any class. Water, Wi-Fi, and drivers who speak English, Italian, and Russian are standard.

For this shorter run, the E-Class comfortably covers couples and solo travellers. Families and small groups take the V-Class. S-Class and Sprinter are available on request for premium bookings or larger parties. All prices are fixed per vehicle at booking.

Book through the form on this page or via WhatsApp; payment is due after the trip.

Malpensa splits arrivals between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 by airline, and your driver confirms which one applies before heading to the arrivals hall. Child seats are available on request at no extra charge — specify ages when booking. Because the valley narrows quickly past Sondrio, several vineyards and small wineries sit within a short detour of the main road, and clients occasionally ask the driver to stop for a pickup or a quick tasting on the way through rather than treating the transfer as a straight point-to-point run. If Sondrio is the first leg of a longer trip rather than the final stop, tell us at booking — we regularly hand off guests onward toward Bormio or Livigno by the same driver on the same day, rather than requiring a second separate booking. The return fare to Malpensa, when you do need it, is fixed at the same rate as the arrival, settled by card or cash after the drive.

It's worth flagging luggage in advance: the E-Class trunk takes two large suitcases and two carry-ons without a squeeze, and the V-Class has room to spare beyond that. Plans shift after booking more often than guests expect — an earlier flight, one more passenger, extra bags picked up along the way — and a WhatsApp message ahead of the pickup date is all it takes for us to swap the vehicle assigned.

Sondrio works well as a stop before continuing to Livigno or Sankt Moritz, and it sits close enough to Como that some clients combine a lake stop with the valley on the same day.
